Prevalence of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease in Iran: A systematic review and meta-analysis

BackgroundNon-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) has a benign course in several patients; however, serious form of this can turn into failure, cirrhosis, and hepato cellular carcinoma.AimThis study aims to estimate the prevalence NFLD Iran.MethodWe searched following databases from January 2000 December 2022: Scopus, Pubmed/Medline, Embase, Web Sciences, Cochrane library, Google Scholar. Also, number Iranian databases, namely MagIran, SID, Elmnet. Additionally, quality included studies was evaluated through Newcastle-Ottawa Scale. We estimated heterogeneity between using I2 statistic. Furthermore, we performed synthesis estimates conducting random-effects by DerSimonian Laird model across with 95% confidence interval. To assess publication bias, also used Egger’s test.ResultsThirty one were eligible for inclusion. The overall participants present 41,971. NAFLD Iran 33% [CI: 27 - 37%], = 99.7% (p < 0.01). 35% 43%] 37% 47%] males females, respectively. test no significant bias identified (P=0.45).ConclusionAccording results study, is not only high but growing trend. effective strategies changing lifestyles, eating habits, encouraging physical activities among Iranians are recommended. providing screening tests, especially high-risk groups, effect on early diagnosis control.
